In chicago this weekend i saw the Olafur Eliasson show 'take your time' at the MCA.

eliasson makes sculptures that reference scientific study and depend on viewer experience in a way that is really exciting. I love how he uses principles from optical physics to place people in the spaces between science and art, and question the borders between the two realms.

I think these are beautiful, and extremely similar to what i am doing right now.

Where eliasson talks about how we see and experience physically, celii and willing comment on how we see and experience things culturally. I think the two bodies of work really go well together.

1. umass/risd exchange show.

at benson hall gallery in the priintmaking building at risd.
this is part one of a two part show.
at the end of this month some of the grads from risd will come up for a show here at umass in the student union art gallery.

every year the umass mfa grads who are halfway through the program have a group show at the student union gallery
the show goes up this tuesday and the opening is monday the 23rd.

and i will be going to chicago for a few days while i am there im going to the mca to check out curt mann in the 12 x 12 gallery... that also should be a good show.

these are some older images i made that appropriate the writing on the backs of found images. I have always been intrigued by the marks people make on their photographs, and how the images and writing inform each other and add to the mystery of the images.

Its been awhile since ive posted, so let me catch you up...

since i last posted i went to the NY photo festival, it was a really great time, the highlights were leslie martin's show 'the ubiquitous image' and tim barbers show, i forget what it was called (for a good time check out tim barber's website www.tinyvices.com). I got to see Joachim Schmid & Penelope Umbrico speak, if you aren't familiar with their work do yourself a favor and look them up. Here is an awful picture of me and curt at the festival:

I swung by pittsburgh a few weeks ago and checked out the Carnegie International show. this year it is titled: 'life on mars'. The exhibition asked the question 'what does it mean to be a human on earth?' their were a few great pieces in the show. a few things that stood out were barry mcgees installation, vija clements 'night sky' pieces, wolfgang tillmans installation (of course) and phil collin's video piece 'zasto ne govorim srpski (na srpskom)"

i just finished up my first year. things went well, my final review wend great, and i feel like im at a really good point in my work.

this weekend i will be going to NYPH, in the the DUMBO area of Brooklyn. there are going to be a lot of interesting speakers and panal discussions, so if you are in new york with nothing to do...

also, i am finally moving into my new studio today. the space isnt as big, but it is much nicer... no mice or roaches. Ill have photos when i get everything set up.

this is a great video by bruce connor called 'erasing dreamland'.
I love the dialogue that happens between the new and the old... and there are some interesting things that happen with the rhythm as well. There are some really beautiful moments.

memory has been on my mind a lot. and i think its showing in some of the new videos im working on. its funny how working in a new medium will bring up new topics and issues in your work that you didnt know were there before.

I like the idea that, despite our specific and individual memories, we still share the same sort of associations with the past. say, for example, you and i both think back to a childhood trip to the ocean... our memories are different, but we both play the role of the vacationer, and make associations the same way. i guess im interested in that line between personal and collective memories.

elijah gowin is a photographer that reminds me of this concept.

and jason salavon as well.

speaking of jason salavon, i just read that the us census dept. commissioned him to do an installation transferring statistics into visual art. the outcome i thought was very interesting. you can read more about it on his website.

Ive been thinking a lot about historic images lately, and the personalities and lives that that take on, independent of their historical truth or sepcific personal connections. The idea of the iconic image is very complex. If youre interested in that idea check out martha roseler's article "in, around and afterthoughts"

My friend Justin sent me this body of work this morning that I thought was really interesting. (and very ofensive)

It is from an artist collective called 'Henry VIII Wives'.
They hire elderly people (from an assisted living home in Glasgow) to reenact iconic documentary photographs.
These are hard images for me to look at, but i think they are a good critique on the nature of documentary photography.

its a collection of proposals for documenta shows by artists, and it an good insight into the minds of some artists that i dont know too much about. its also interesting to see what attitudes artists have towards the art world after being a part of it for so long.

Things have settled down a little bit.
im getting used to the town, and getting used to being away from home.

these have been occupying my time over the past week.
Im doing my best to catch up on the books I bought over the summer since im assuming Ill be too busy to read for fun once school starts up.

I still have no idea where my work will go through out the past year, but Im excited to play around with new methods and influences.

over the summer, I spent my time working maintenance at St. James the Less elementary school. This is where I spent my k-8 years, and where my mother has taught for over 25 years and my father is the financial director. Working here enabled me to walk freely through out the building by myself and get to know the space and take some photographs. I havent had time to sort through all of the film, but here are some of the rough images.

Long Time, No See.

I have been neglecting my blogger duties for a few months, sorry about that.

Im back in columbus for the summer and working at my old grade school.
Im going to grad school at UMASS.
I leave in less than a month.
I will be teaching ART 105:Design.
I have been taking pictures.
A number of my friends have gotten married.
I am very poor.

I think that gets everything back up to speed.
I promise new images later on today.

My work has kind of been all over the place. I am taking advantage of being in a situation where I do not have to commit to any one project or idea, and just making random work.

I have been working more with the scratches, and experimenting with bookmaking and the borrowed image, and taking pictures with this.

These are images from my newest body of work , entitled 'A Fortiori'. I have always been interested in the fact that a photograph is subject to evolution throughout time. As years go by, the purpose, meaning, and effect of a photograph are forced to change with the world around them. An image taken for documentary purposes, for example, can eventually take on a more iconic meaning. A family snapshot has the ability to become ironic or more sentimental as the family develops. These images explore that concept. By altering the condition of the photograph using lighting, cropping, folding, and combining images, then ultimately rephotographing the image, I create a new purpose for them; I give them new life, and new importance.
